This Season's Clashtastic Fashion!

This season, the fashion rulebook has been temporarily disregarded (at least parts of it--note to everyone: scrunchies are still O-U-T) and we're embracing a culture of devil-may care attitudes, especially when it comes to the old golden rules of what goes with what! It's time to be bold, irreverent and just a little bit silly, with major labels giving us a lot to think about with their brighter-than bright prints and dresses and oh-so-scandalous pattern-pairing. If your mouth goes dry and your palms start to sweat at the thought of all this (mis-matched) colour, never fear...here is an easy-to-follow guide on how to embrace the new trend and make it your own!

Tie It In

Believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to do the new clashtastic look. It's not a case of simply grabbing as many conflicting colours and patterns as possible and then wearing them all at the same time, oh no. It's all about editing and continuity in your outfits, and the best way to do this is to choose a unifying feature in all of the pieces you select. Let's say for example you've got to pick shoes, a dress, a cardigan and a scarf/bag. Pick whatever you want to be the main feature--perhaps you've got a bright-red pair of converse you want to showcase, or a crazy-patterned dress you're dying to give centre-stage. Running with the 'feature piece', pick items that have at least one element in common with it. Maybe the patterns is completely clashing but they share an identical shade of green, or perhaps the colours are all off but the pattern is stylistically similar. We want to avoid matchy-match, but we also want to make it clear that it's statement dressing, not accidental mayhem.

Let the 'You' Shine Through

Any outfit, no matter how outlandish, will work if you inject a dose of your personality into it. Choose pieces that reflect who you are as a person--if you're not really a 'clashing' type of girl then you don;t have to force it--start small! Maybe a few contrasting colours will give you a taste for this trend.

Be Playful

The clashing trend is nothing if not playful. It's a way to stand out from the crowd, poke your tongue out at uptight fashion laws and forget what your mother always told you about blue and green and white shoes after labour day! Buy dresses online for that added touch of individuality, and shop in vintage stores for those unique finds. Now is the time to dust off those pieces you bought but thought 'I've nothing to wear it with!'--and put it on anyway!
